Nursing school: learn the basics

Nursing school is a must for those who wish to become registered nurses.

What do nurses do?

If you’ve ever been in the hospital – or if you know someone who has been – then you probably noticed the men and women performing a variety of tasks on behalf of doctors and patients. Most of these workers were probably nurses. Nurses are responsible for maintaining the well being of their patients, as well as carrying out various courses of treatments prescribed by doctors. When patients arrive at the hospital, it’s usually the nurse who records their vital signs; during the night, it’s the nurses who watch over the patients while the doctors are at home sleeping.

Nurses provide care in various other settings. At senior residential facilities, nurses help prescribe treatments while also helping residents bathe, eat and get dressed. Some nurses assist with different types of therapy. In health clinics, nurses may interview patients for information about their health conditions, family medical histories and more. Nurses also work in emergency rooms, where they assist doctors and surgeons in intense, stressful situations where life and death may hang in the balance.

How long does nursing school take to complete?

The fastest way to become a nurse is to complete a two-year associate’s degree course at a junior or community college. However, people who are serious about becoming nurses should consider enrolling in four-year courses at accredited state schools. High school students may be able to shave time off of their college workload by taking advanced-placement math, English, foreign language, computer science and science classes. Upon graduating from nursing school, some nurses go on to earn graduate’s degrees.
